ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS
Location.
Mawnan Smith is about 5 miles from Falmouth and forms the hub for the attractions of the North Helford with the famous gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan being only 1 mile away. This area is classified as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB) and an estimated 250,000 visitors per/year pass through the village on route to the gardens and the estuary. The Smithy is  located close to the  central square on one of the main roads leading into the village. Mawnan Smith  contains a  pub, restaurant and a diverse selection of shops and facilities. Full planning permission has been granted for the re-construction of the Smithy and the building of 2 new workshops to complement it. The building work should be started in the Winter of 2005 and anticipated completion in  late Spring 2006.
The Workshops are located behind the Smithy, a Grade II listed building, classified as a building of architectural and historical interest.
The restoration will provide an authentic setting for the practice of a traditional craft which is still to this day in demand. Access by the public to the Smithy (and to the adjoining workshops) will be encouraged and the building design will facilitate the demonstration of traditional skills to schools, colleges and other visitors  through the creation of a viewing and interpretation area. The project will also establish working heritage links with local museums, visitor attractions and educational establishments including a web cam link.
